Introduction
Go is a game of strategy. Two players compete in acquiring
territory by placing markers on a smooth wooden board with a
simple grid drawn on it, usually 19 by 19 lines. Each player
seeks to enclose territory with his markers, much like
partitioning a field with sections of fencing. Further, each
player may capture his opponent markers. The object of the game
is to enclose the most territory, a simple goal that leads to
the elegant and fascinating complexities of go.

初级英文写作
(English Writing,Grade:5-6)
Teacher: Eric Slavin,
nowishistory@yahoo.com
Classroom: 364
Do Middle School aged children love comic
books more than they enjoy working on their own creative
writing? If you have answered yes to this question, then be in
for a surprise when you see your child taking pleasure in
his/her creativity as your child responds in well-structured
English to storyboarding exercises, using popular comic books as
a teaching device. Each class will feature a new comic, the
dialogue in which has been covered over and then filled in with
the students’ own story. Each student will then use a fresh
piece of paper to transcribe the story that was prompted by the
storyboarding into a work that they can then add to, and make
more elaborate. The class features as well a brief dictation
session, which serves to measure and to assess accuracy in
transcribing phonetic English into proper written English.
Additionally, the students will receive corrections on the work
that they had done during the previous class, and will be
encouraged to incorporate those improvements into their future
work. At the end of the semester, there will be a stand-up
presentation of each student’s best work, which will be
digitally recorded with a microphone, and made into an audio CD
for everyone’s enjoyment.
Eric J. Slavin, MPS, is a poet who has
taught English as a Second Language at community colleges for
ten years, and who has also taught Elementary and Middle School
chess, and art classes to children ranging from all ages.
