2020 Raleigh Academy of Chinese Language (RACL) Summer Camps
RACL will offfer the following camps/short classes over this summer. Due to the pandemic situation, all of this year’s camp will be held online via Zoom, and each of the camps/classes will have different dates and hours. The Camps are tentatively set as below and subject to change.
- SAT Class for Rising 7th – 8th Graders
- SAT and ACT Preparation Class for 9th – 11th Grades
- RACL Chess Camp

- 古诗诵读与学唱中文儿歌
- SAT Class for Rising 7th – 8th Graders
The purpose of this camp is to help rising 7th graders prepare for the SAT test for programs such as the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP) and the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY). It is mainly focused on rising 7th graders. Rising 6th and 8th graders are welcome too and they will also benefit from the camp. The camp will be taught by several North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) high-school students who have done very well on the SAT test.
Period: 08/03/2020 – 08/07/2020
Hours: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM (with 1 hour lunch break)

2. SAT and ACT Preparation Class for 9th – 11th Graders
The propose of the SAT and ACT preparation class is to help 9th – 11th grade students preparing for the reading and writing (grammar) sections of those tests. The camp will help students alleviate test anxiety and have students well-prepared for the structure of the tests. The camp will be taught by Ms. Blair Yarborough. Ms. Yarborough is the AIG program chair at Daniels Global Studies Magnet Middle School in Wake County. She is the experienced SAT/ACT prep class teachers and has been teaching at RACL many years. She has helped many students successfully taken SAT and ACT test. This is always the most popular class at the RACL summer camp.

3. RACL Chess Camp (国际象棋）
National Chess Master Alex Chen and Certified Chess Coach Angela Chen will teach engaging lessons,
critical tactics, and get students ready for competitive chess play with plenty of tournaments. This camp is for players at all levels from beginner to intermediate and advanced levels, and campers will be coached per their skill levels in groups. Alex and Angela have been teaching Chess at RACL for a while and their activity classs is one of the most popular classes.

Hours: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

4. 中文写作入门
写作文通常对于学生来说是个难题，更何况对那些中文不是第一语言，一星期只上约两小时中文课的学生来说更是难题。如何让学生在暑假中不忘记已学过的词汇和句子，而且能用这些学过的词汇和句子来培养他们写作文的兴趣和基础？RACL计划在七月份开《中文写作入门》网课。时间是两周（七月十三日至七月二十四），周一至五下午1：30-3：30上课（暂定）。
这门课由在洛丽汉语学校执教的、中文教学经验丰富的郭蔚雯老师主讲，主要对象是RACL 的三年级和四年级学生。主要是用拼音输入法在电脑练习简单的写作（手写也可以，但需要家长配合将孩子作文拍照上传给老师）。课上先是从简单的看图说几句话和写几句话开始，然后学写留言条和描写人、物、景色的一段话或小短文，最后练习简单的记叙文和观后感等。主要在课上引导学生用已经学过的词汇和句子进行大量的“说“和“写”的练习。

5. 古诗诵读与中文儿歌学唱
《诵读古诗，学唱歌曲》古诗词浓缩了汉语的精华，具有节奏感和韵律感。孩子们阅读和背诵古诗，能够更好地体会诗词的语言美，意境美和想象美。唱歌是另一种很好的中文学习方式。孩子们通过学唱一些经典的儿童歌曲，不仅能够提高语言水平，而且还能够帮助他们建立自信，调节情绪缓解压力。通过这两种方式，孩子们一定会在学习中文兴趣，词汇量，语言表达能力，语感和情感等方面得到提升。
主讲人李淑静（Shujing Suzy Li）老师已有30多年的教学经验，现在两所中文学校教授中文。在教学中逐渐发现诵读古诗和学唱歌曲能够给学习中文的孩子们带来很多益处。
授课对象: 1-3年级，或4-6年级的学生; 授课时间：总共两周，周一到周五，每天两个小时
